A SELF-CONFESSED chocoholic who works for a care company in Wales is fundraising for charity by giving up chocolate this month (February, 2019).
Ffion Evans, who is a Registered Manager at Abacare’s Bangor office, is raising money for the British Heart Foundation by going on a ‘dechox’ as she says hearts need care too.
She said: “Ten years ago our family was ripped apart when we lost our dad to a heart attack at the age of 51. He is greatly missed, and I don’t want any other family to have to suffer like we did, so I have decided to do what I can to raise some much-needed funds and awareness for the British Heart Foundation.
“To do this I am giving up chocolate for an entire month. This is a huge deal for me as I absolutely love chocolate. The British Heart Foundation was founded in 1961 by a group of medical professionals who were concerned about the increasing death rate from cardiovascular disease. They wanted to fund extra research into the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of heart and circulatory diseases.
The charity spends more than £100 million a year funding scientists around the UK and are currently funding more than 1000 research projects.
There are around seven million people living with heart and circulatory diseases in the UK. They cause 25% of all deaths in the UK, that’s more than 150,000 each year. An average of 420 people each day or one death every three minutes.
Around 42,000 people under the age of 75 in the UK die from cardiovascular disease each year.
Since the British Heart Foundation was established the annual number of deaths from heart and circulatory diseases in the UK has fallen by more than half.
