AN AWARD-WINNING Somerset farm shop is hosting a Curry Night this month featuring cuisine inspired from a culture thousands of miles away while championing produce from closer to home (May 2023).

Rumwell Farm Shop’s event on Thursday, May 25 will include a madras made from its hand-reared Angus cattle and dishes using potatoes grown on the family farm just up the road.

Anne Mitchell, Partner at the farm shop on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, says: “It’s very important that we use as many locally and regionally sourced ingredients as possible in our dishes and that produce grown and reared on our own farm, just four miles from the shop, are included wherever possible too. Whether that’s our own meat, eggs, apples or potatoes. Sustainability, provenance and keeping food miles down are very much part of our ethos and what we do here. We also focus on making real food, from real ingredients, onsite.

“So, in the spirit of celebrating our home reared and grown produce, and other items sourced from as nearby as possible, spices excluded, we’re inviting everyone to come along and enjoy a traditional Indian meal made by our wonderful chefs. It takes place in the modern and comfortable surroundings of our new Rumwell Orchard extension with delightful views of our apple orchard.

“Each table will be provided with a selection of curries to choose from including beef madras, featuring our Rumwell Angus beef hand-reared on our farm in Hillcommon, chicken korma and vegetable biriyani.

“Plus, a variety of side dishes such as aromatic pilau rice, poppadoms, assorted naans, onion bhajis and Bombay potatoes, all made by our skilled chefs here onsite.“The main course is followed by a selection of delicious homemade desserts, which can be ordered separately on the night. Our normal café menu will be available for desserts.”

Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate more than 25 years ago.

Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the Farm Shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as their wives, Sophie and Donna.

Rumwell Farm Shop won nine Taste of the West Gold Awards in 2022 for its Shop and Café and also for some of its made onsite products. It was also a finalist in the Large Farm Shop of the Year category in the 2023 national Farm Retail Awards.

The Shop has a traditional Butchery counter selling its home-reared and free-range pork and Rumwell Angus beef. Its dry cured back bacon was given the title of overall Champion Bacon in the 2022 Taste of the West Awards.

Also onsite is the new, purpose-built Rumwell Orchard events space, a Delicatessen, Bakery, Jam Kitchen, Food Hall, Wine Cellar, Gluten Free Kitchen, Food To Go service and Gift Room.

The food prepared in the Café kitchen is sourced from the Farm Shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and other regional suppliers. The Café kitchen has Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free accreditation.

Doors open at 6.30pm. Tickets cost £16.95 per person.
