SOUTHAMPTON Mental Health Network is calling on city residents to help shine a spotlight on kindness by nominating individuals, organisations and companies for its Stars for Stars recognition scheme (March 2026).

Initiated by Saire Herschel-Clark, co‑founder of the Network and the first leader of the charity’s SMILE (Southampton Mental Illness Lived Experience) group, the initiative was inspired by a moment of compassion.

Southampton Mental Health Network Administrator, Chloe Naegeli, explains: “During a difficult episode at Sainsbury’s in Portswood, Saire received such calm and reassuring support that she thought it would be great to highlight others who show the same care and understanding.

“Today, that spark has grown into a city‑wide movement celebrating the everyday champions of mental well-being here in Southampton.”

Stars for Stars recognises businesses, organisations and individuals across the city who foster positive mental health and well‑being. From a shop assistant who offers a listening ear, to a café that creates a safe and welcoming space, to a community group that lifts-up residents – anyone can be nominated.

Each star is awarded for one year. Nominations are currently open for the January–March, spring quarter, and close on March 31, 2026, with the next awards presented in April.

Chloe adds: “Nominating is simple and free. Visit our website and head to the news area to complete a short form or request a form directly if needed. Just share a few words about why your nominee or nominees deserve recognition.”

Membership of Southampton Mental Health Network is not required to nominate or to be nominated.

Recipients will receive a star award dated with their presentation month, along with clear guidelines on how to display it on a window, in print materials, online or across social media.

Chloe continues: “It’s about celebrating kindness and creating a city where mental wellbeing is everyone’s business. By recognising small acts of understanding, our initiative aims to strengthen community connection and make Southampton a more compassionate place for all.

“Residents are encouraged to submit their nominations now and help shine a light on those who make a difference – large or small. Nominate your star today and help us brighten Southampton together.”

Southampton Mental Health Network aims to create welcoming spaces for discussion, be understanding and supportive of those living with mental health challenges, boost wellbeing and improve knowledge and awareness in the city.

It became publicly active in 2019 and, with more than 100 member organisations involved in its development, became a charity in September 2022.

Working together, these organisations want to make Southampton a mental wellbeing friendly city, ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion for all.

Chloe concludes: “As an organisation, we’re looking at ways we can collectively collaborate to help make our city a happier place where everyone can thrive. It’s all about how we work together, how we behave towards each other and what we value as residents and workers in our city.”
