KEV SHAW from Southampton has recently joined the team at a new community bakery in the city as its Head Baker and hopes to help residents – one bake at a time (February 2022).
Kev, who is a lay Minister, has started at CommuniBakes on St James Road, Shirley, which is the commercial arm of the good neighbours’ charity Communicare.
The 52-year-old said: “I am thrilled to have joined the team at CommuniBakes, it feels fantastic to be baking for such a good cause.
“Every cake or loaf someone buys from us is helping someone who lives here through the work of the charity Communicare, which we support. In days gone past, there used to be a real sense of community, with towns having their own bakers, butchers and greengrocers and having CommuniBakes brings that back and brings the local people together and feel a part of the neighbourhood.”
Kev undertook a three-year apprenticeship including college training and has more than 36 years’ experience in the baking industry.
In his spare time, he enjoys fishing, watercolour painting and riding fixed gear bikes. He is also a lay Minister for the United Reformed Church.
CommuniBakes’ Director, Tim Miller said: “Kev is a fantastic and experienced baker, and we are thrilled to have welcomed him to the team. He will be heading up the team of bakers to create some wonderfully delicious cakes, breads and more! His sourdough bread is certainly one to watch out for.”
Communicare, which is a friendly, neighbourhood charity, provides services that enrich the lives of lonely and isolated people in and around Southampton. Its services are staffed by its committed, kind-hearted volunteers, known as Communiteers, who give their time freely.
Communicare’s Good Neighbours’ Network currently supports more than 560 individuals/families through tasks including one-to-one telephone befriending, transport for essential appointments and assistance with shopping.
The services Communicare provides are free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to make a donation if they are able to, and Communiteers are offered expenses.
