AN AWARD-WINNING farm shop in Somerset which created an original Christmas pudding doughnut to help customers get that festive feeling says the product has been a huge success (December 2020).
The sugary confection has been selling well throughout December as Rumwell Farm Shop’s ‘Doughnut of the Month’ alongside its Bakery’s other festive chocolate orange flavour.
Bob Boulton, Bread Bakery Manager of Rumwell Farm Shop, which is located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, said: “Our doughnuts are flying off the shelves at the moment and we have two wonderful flavours we’ve created that are vying for the bestseller position this month – Christmas pudding and chocolate orange. We’re now wondering which will be our customers number one favourite by the time we close on Christmas Eve and are keeping a close eye on the figures!
“Our doughnuts are definitely the best seller in our Bakery, and on average we sell around 300 of our Doughnut of the Month flavour each week, as well as hundreds of the other flavours we make too. In November, in one week we sold more than 1,000 of our chocolate orange flavoured doughnuts.
“Because we had such a huge hit with our chocolate orange version, we have kept it going throughout December to meet demand.
“We love getting creative with flavours and themes for our doughnuts. Every month since the first lockdown, to bring a bit of joy in people’s lives, we’ve created new and different flavours for our customers to try and they have included Spiced Pumpkin, the Rumwell Apple and Blackberry and Rhubarb and Custard versions.
“I use a recipe from the 1930s for our doughnuts, which I found from a bakery book in an antique shop. I like to use traditional recipes and methods where possible, as I think they produce the best results and are the tastiest. Both the Christmas Pudding and chocolate orange flavours will be available for people to buy until the end of December and we will let everyone know on our social media what was the most popular then.”
Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate.
Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as daughters-in-law Sophie and Donna.
Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional butchery counter selling free range pork and Aberdeen Angus beef reared just four miles away on the family farm. There is also a delicatessen, bakery, jam kitchen, food hall, wine cellar and gift room.
Home grown potatoes are also still available, when in season, as well as everything from fruit, vegetables and groceries to plants, flowers, gifts and cards.
The Rumwell Cafe can seat approximately 80 people. The food prepared in the cafe kitchen is sourced from the farm shop, the Mitchell family farm and regional suppliers.
If you haven’t been to Rumwell’s Bakery yet or tasted some of Bob and the team’s wonderful bakes, then it’s well worth a visit this December for the doughnuts alone!
The Christmas Pudding Doughnut of the Month flavour is just 95p as well as the chocolate orange flavour. The other doughnuts available are 85p.
Families are welcome to the cafe and there is a menu especially for children. The cafe also serves afternoon teas, carvery on a Sunday and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
