SOMERSET residents are being asked to design a regal doughnut to win a competition to see their creation crowned as May’s Doughnut of The Month at an award-winning farm shop (February 2023).
Rumwell Farm Shop & Café on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington is asking people to suggest ideas and the best one will be created to celebrate King Charles III’s Coronation.
Partner at the Farm Shop, Anne Mitchell says: “We are becoming well-known for our bespoke, traditional doughnuts, which our team of bakers make on-site. Their popularity has grown over the years, and we thought it would be great fun to run a competition to create a doughnut fit for a king.
“We’re asking adults and children to come up with a unique doughnut filling and submit their ideas to us. The winner will have their doughnut made and sold in our Bakery throughout May to celebrate the King’s Coronation on May 6.
“We want to see some really regal and original doughnut filling ideas. Entries, including drawings and any recipes, can be submitted via email to info@rumwellfarmshop.com and should be sent to us by 5pm on Friday, March 31.
“A winner will be picked and announced on our social media pages on April 12 and the winning doughnut will be served throughout May. They will also receive a selection of 12 doughnuts and be asked to collect their prize, and have their photos taken for publicity, including social media, at a mutually agreeable time. Children who enter need to have their submissions sent in by their parents or guardians, who will need to give permission for publicity.”
Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate more than 25 years ago.
Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as their wives, Sophie and Donna.
Rumwell Farm Shop, which won nine Taste of the West Gold Awards in 2022 for its shop and café and also for some of its made onsite products, has a traditional Butchery counter selling its home-reared and free-range pork and Rumwell Angus beef. It’s traditional, dry cured back bacon was recently given the title of overall Champion Bacon in the Taste of the West Awards.
There is also a Delicatessen, Bakery, Jam Kitchen, Food Hall, Wine Cellar, Gluten Free Kitchen and Gift Room. Its Café kitchen has also achieved Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free accreditation.
The food prepared in the Café kitchen is sourced from the Farm Shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and other regional suppliers.
Families are welcome to the Café and there is a menu especially for children. It also serves afternoon teas, Sunday carvery and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
