SOMERSET motorists can get free advice this month on how to get more miles for their money from a tank of fuel from a new automotive centre (June 2022).

As petrol and diesel prices continue to rise, First Stop in Weston-super-Mare is offering drivers tips on fuel efficiency to help them save money.

First Stop Weston’s Centre Manager Dan Radford says: “We all need to make sure we get the most out of a tank of fuel these days.

“We are already seeing very high fuel prices this year; with petrol and diesel prices looking likely to continue going up. This means increased pressure on our wallets and purses with inflation and rising living costs added in as well, so we all need to ensure we are using fuel efficiently.”

According to the AA’s latest figures, the average price of unleaded petrol rose from £148.1 per litre to £163.8 in March. Diesel increased from £151.6 to £173.8 per litre in March too.

Dan adds: “There are some very simple steps a motorist can take to use less fuel and ensure their car is kept in a good working order.

“By having your tyres correctly inflated and your wheels aligned you can save pounds. Also ensuring that your vehicle has fresh oil and is serviced regularly will keep it in good condition and save you money in the long run.

“By following my top 10 tips, drivers can help to make their car go further between fills at the fuel pump. This helps save money and reduces the environmental impact caused by vehicles too, which is very important these days, as we all need to be more planet positive and to ensure what we do is as sustainable as possible.”

Dan’s top 10 tips for using less fuel and cutting car costs are:

  1. Keep tyres correctly inflated
  2. Regularly check your wheel alignment to keep your vehicle as energy efficient as possible
  3. Drive smoothly
  4. Maintain a steady speed
  5. Don’t rev the engine
  6. Change up gears as soon as it is practical
  7. Avoid engine idling for long periods
  8. Do not overload vehicles
  9. Change worn parts
  10. Avoid peak hour and heavy traffic when possible.
