A NOTTINGHAM-BASED fried chicken kit producer has not only transformed the taste of its chicken coatings, but it has also revamped its packaging to ensure it’s recyclable and sustainable too (February 2022).
White’s Gourmet Fried Chicken turned to Devon-based printed packaging specialist Newton Print Ltd to produce an eco-friendly gable box style on a 490 micron carton board and with a tuck-flap closure.
Hamza Qureshi, Founder of White’s Gourmet Chicken, said: “Pre-pandemic, we ran a ‘dark kitchen’, which is essentially a kitchen preparing and selling food exclusively for delivery from a professional kitchen. However, like many food-based businesses we’ve evolved and adapted to the ongoing changes in our industry.
“Fortunately, I already had a core offering and with help from the Food Innovation Centre at the University of Nottingham, we developed the Bird Dust range of chicken coatings.
“Three different flavours were developed, Crunchy Fried Chicken Coating, Panko Fried Chicken Coating and Reaper Fried Chicken Coating, in 250g packs for retail and for direct sale to consumers, which resulted in a need to improve our packaging to make it more visually appealing to our customers, while being sustainable.
“Newton Print offered a sampling service to help me narrow down the best packaging to reflect my brand and new products. Not only was it helpful to see alternative solutions, but it meant we could see the samples in person, and not be wasteful.”
Its gable box style worked well with the shape of the pouch that was used for the fried chicken coating mixes and a crash-lock base meant that assembly time was kept to a minimum.
Nathan Besley, Head of Sales and Customer Service at Newton Print: “We work closely with many SMEs on their printed packaging, so we were delighted to help Hamza when he got in touch.
“Together we have created some fantastic looking packaging that holds our Carbon Balanced certification, in addition to the FSC-certified carton board used. Sustainability is just as important these days as having an easy-on-the-eye and user-friendly box design.”
