SOUTHAMPTON folk who are seeking socialisation will be able to attend intergenerational events in the city hosted by a charity helping to combat loneliness and bringing generations together (January 2023).
Communicare is trialling an intergenerational event at St Mary’s Primary School on Ascupart Street from Monday, January 30 from 10am-12noon, which is open to people of all ages.
Tricia Kenyon, Service Development Officer at Communicare, which helps vulnerable and isolated people, said: “Due to the success of our Woolston Friendship Club, we have decided to run another intergenerational get together to help anyone out there who might be feeling lonely at this time of year.
“The school is very kindly teaming up with Saint Mary’s Church and us. It’s encouraging everyone who attends the event to help and encourage its year six children with some model building.
“We have been wanting to draw together people from across the generational divide for some time, as part of our vision to beat loneliness and isolation. It’s great this is coming together, and that schools and churches have jumped at the chance to work with us to make it happen.
“It’s great for youngsters from the school to meet older folk and gain wisdom and a different perspective on life. It’s also beneficial for older people to connect with younger generations and learn new things.”

Tricia added: “We will also be taking some of our service users along to King’s Church’s Cuppas group on Thursday, January 19, February 23 and March 23 where they will be able to interact and socialise with 10 year five pupils from Oakwood Primary School.”
Communicare, which is a friendly, neighbourhood charity, provides services that enrich the lives of isolated people in and around Southampton.
Communicare’s services are staffed by its devoted volunteers, known as Communiteers, who give their time freely.
The charity is currently supporting more than 600 individuals/families through tasks including one-to-one telephone befriending and transport for essential appointments and assistance with shopping.
The services Communicare provides are free to users, although beneficiaries are invited to make a donation if they are able to, and Communiteers are offered expenses.
