A SOMERSET farm shop has re-launched its Christmas pudding doughnut to help customers get that festive feeling this year (December 2021).
The sugary confection has been revamped and named Rumwell Farm Shop’s ‘Doughnut of the Month’ alongside its Bakery’s other festive offering – the Black Forest Gateaux doughnut.
Bob Boulton, Bakery Manager of Rumwell Farm Shop, which is located on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, said: “Our doughnuts are flying off the shelves right now and we’ve produced two fantastic flavours that are competing for the top spot this month: Christmas Pudding and Black Forest Gateaux. We decided to bring back the Christmas pudding doughnut due to popular demand and we wanted to help spread some much-needed festive cheer, especially after recent Government announcements.
“It’s an improved version of the one we made in 2020, but this year we’ve updated the recipe and added white icing with a white chocolate holly leaf on top. We’re now curious to see which one will be our customers’ top choice for December when we close on New Year’s Eve, and we’re keeping a careful check on the tally.
“Our doughnuts are by far the most popular item in our Bakery. Each month, along with our other general flavours, we produce a different Doughnut of the Month. This year these have included Blueberry, Lemon Meringue and Iced Raspberry.
“We enjoy experimenting with different flavours and themes for our doughnuts. Since the initial lockdown last year, we’ve introduced new and distinct flavours for our customers to enjoy every month to add a little joy to their lives, like Maple and Pecan, Bakewell tart, Banoffee and Bueno.”
On average, the Rumwell Bakery sell more than 300 of its Doughnut of the Month per week, in addition to hundreds of other flavours.
Anne Mitchell, Joint Owner of the Farm Shop says: “If you haven’t been to our Bakery yet or tasted some of Bob and the team’s wonderful bakes, then it’s well worth a visit for the doughnuts alone!”
Bob uses a recipe from the 1930s for his doughnuts, which he found in a bakery book in an antique shop.
He adds: “I like to use traditional recipes and methods where possible, as I think they produce the best results and are the tastiest.”
Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate.
Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the farm shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as daughters-in-law Sophie and Donna.
Rumwell Farm Shop has a traditional Butchery counter selling its home-reared and free-range pork and Rumwell Angus beef. There are also The Rumwell Flower Shed, a Delicatessen, Bakery, Jam Kitchen, Food Hall, Wine Cellar and Gift Room on-site.
The Rumwell Café is a large and spacious building. The food prepared in the Café kitchen is sourced from the Farm Shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and other regional suppliers.
Families are welcome to the Café and there is a menu especially for children. It also serves afternoon teas, roast carvery Sunday lunches and is licensed to sell alcoholic beverages.
