CAROLYN Treadwell from Taunton has been crowned the winner of a coronation-theme design-a-doughnut competition run by an award-winning farm shop and her winning creation will go on sale this month (May 2023).
Carolyn’s regal doughnut features lemon cream, allegedly King Charles III’s favourite dessert, and will be Rumwell Farm Shop’s May Doughnut of The Month to help celebrate His Majesty’s coronation.
Anne Mitchell, Partner at Rumwell Farm Shop on the A38 between Taunton and Wellington, explains: “We’d like to say a huge ‘congratulations’ to Carolyn on winning our design-a-doughnut competition. The entries we had were extremely impressive and it was difficult to choose just one that was fit for a King!
“More than 75% of the entries we received had some variation of lemon cream, which we understand is King Charles III’s favourite dessert, so well done everyone who delved into the history books and gossip columns to unearth that! From all these lemon cream suggestions, Carolyn’s was chosen randomly as the winner.
“We had so many children’s entries too and were overwhelmed with the originality of their suggestions.”
Carolyn’s doughnut will now be made in Rumwell Farm Shop’s Bakery and sold throughout May. Carolyn received a selection of 12 doughnuts as her prize.
Carolyn says: “I’m amazed to have won. I looked into the King’s favourite flavours online for inspiration and I’m delighted I was selected as the winner. We’re looking forward to trying them!”
Rumwell Farm Shop is an independent, family-run, award-winning business owned by the Mitchell family. It was originally a potato store, when David and Anne Mitchell began selling their potatoes and free-range eggs at the gate more than 25 years ago.
Due to customer demand, the range of products soon increased, and the Farm Shop grew into the place it is today. David and Anne’s sons, James and Jack, are now also involved in the business, as well as their wives, Sophie and Donna.
Rumwell Farm Shop won nine Taste of the West Gold Awards in 2022 for its Shop and Café and also for some of its made onsite products. It was also a finalist in the Large Farm Shop of the Year category in the 2023 national Farm Retail Awards.
The Shop has a traditional Butchery counter selling its home-reared and free-range pork and Rumwell Angus beef. Its dry cured back bacon was given the title of overall Champion Bacon in the 2022 Taste of the West Awards.
Also onsite is the new, purpose-built Rumwell Orchard events space, a Delicatessen, Bakery, Jam Kitchen, Food Hall, Wine Cellar, Gluten Free Kitchen, Food To Go service and Gift Room.
The food prepared in the Café kitchen is sourced from the Farm Shop, the Mitchell family farm, which is just four miles away, and other regional suppliers. The Café kitchen has Coeliac UK’s Gluten Free accreditation.
